Rules to Dressing Right for your Body Type


A lot of us love to look trendy and at the same time classy but a lot of people do it wrong. Every individual has their own fashion style, however, it is important to know that what works for person A may not necessarily work for person B. We all have different body types so we tend to wear different kinds of outfits to suit our body types. Dressing right becomes a necessity when you want to be taken seriously especially at formal occasions. First, you must determine the body type you have and understand how to choose outfits to suit your body. Let’s look at the rules to dressing right for the different types of body shapes we have;

Apple body type; this body shape is characterized with bust three or more inches bigger than the hips, slim limbs, slim legs, protruding tummy.

Pear shape body type; this is the opposite of apple body type. It is characterized with hips larger than the bust, flat tummy, and fuller legs.

Rectangular or straight body type; with this body type, the waist and hips are almost the same if not the same.

Inverted pear shape; this body type is simply the opposite of the pear shape body type.

Hourglass body type; this body type is usually very easy to determine. It features a significantly defined waist, flat tummy and hip and bust line being the same width.

Now we know the different body types, we will now look at what to wear to suit our body types.

Apple body shape; is also known as the circle body shape.

Upper body: People with this body shape should wear loosely fitted clothes around the waist area. This helps to conceal a full tummy. Avoid waist cinching tops and tops with belts.

Lower body; avoid high waist pants and skinny jeans. You can wear straight, slim and bootleg pants. Dresses with ruching or gathering hide the tummy and gives an illusion of an hourglass figure.

Pear body type; also known as triangle body type

Upper body; tops with layers like peplum work very well. Fitted tops create a balance and fill out the upper body

Lower body; dresses and skirts with A-line cuts flatters the body. Avoid high waist straight skirts and pants. Bootleg and straight pants can be worn.

Rectangular or straight body type; also known as ruler body shape

Upper body; off shoulder tops, halter necks, and tank tops look amazing on this body type.

Lower body; high waist pants and boot cut pants are great for you. Wrap dresses give a more feminine look.

Hourglass body shape

Upper body; clean simple tops with three-quarter sleeves are best for you. Tops with gathering at the waist and are flare at the hips are perfect. Jackets that are straight from the top to the waist and flare at the hips compliments the body.

Lower body; steer clear of extremely tight outfits to avoid exposing too much. Pencil skirts, bootleg pants, and skinny jeans are fantastic.

Inverted pear shape body type; also known as inverted rectangle body type

Upper body; flair tops, v-neck tops and tops without ruffles minimizes a stronger upper body.

Lower body; wide leg pants, long skirts, flowy skirts make your lower body look bigger and works best for your body type.
